The Karate Center is honored to present the 16th Annual Walla Walla Karate Tournament on Saturday, February 9, 2008.  The tournament will be held at the Dietrich Dome at Walla Walla Community College (visit www.wwcc.edu) and will involve more than 300 competitors from Canada , Montana , Wyoming , and all over Washington , Oregon and Idaho .  Participants are all students of traditional Japanese Shudokan Karate.  Japanese Shudokan Karate originated from Okinawan royalty and was handed down for many generations.  The tradition traveled to the United States with Walter Todd who trained in Shudokan Karate in Japan with a Japanese Prince named Kanken Toyama.  Upon returning to the United States Todd taught Morris Mack from Yakima , WA who, in turn, trained David Lybbert, sensei at the Karate Center .  Sensei Dave has been a student of Shudokan Karate since the 1970’s and is now a 6th degree black belt and winner of many Grand Champion trophies from tournaments all over the region.

Competitors in the tournament will be displaying their knowledge in the Kata, Kumite (sparring) and the Weapons divisions.  Weapons competitors will show their skill in the bo, the sword (Samurai), the sais , the numchucks and other weapons of choice.  This year there will also be a new Entertainment division.  Tournament forms may be downloaded above,

As a bonus, two seminars will be offered prior to the tournament at The Karate Center in Walla Walla , located at 9 W Birch Street (click here for map).  On Friday, February 8, 2008 at 6:30pm, Sensei Frank Arnet will teach a kumite seminar.  Then, Sensei John Franco Jr. will teach the kata Empi on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 7:45pm, following the kumite seminar.  Sensei John will be performing this kata at Las Vegas and we are privileged to get a preview of it at our event.  The cost for one seminar is $35.00, and only $10.00 more to attend the second seminar.  Reservations should be made by calling The Karate Center at (509) 529-8809; seminars will be limited to around 20 participants.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and enjoy watching the competitions.  Admission is $4.00 at the door of the Dietrich Dome at Walla Walla Community College .   Competition begins at 10:00am, with doors opening at 8:00am for competitors.
