The
Karate
Center
is honored to present the 16th Annual
Walla Walla
Karate Tournament on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The tournament will
be held at the Dietrich Dome at
Walla Walla
Community College
(visit www.wwcc.edu) and will
involve more than 300 competitors from
Canada
,
Montana
,
Wyoming
, and all over
Washington
,
Oregon
and
Idaho
. Participants are all students of traditional Japanese Shudokan Karate.
Japanese Shudokan Karate originated from Okinawan royalty and was handed down
for many generations. The tradition traveled to the
United States
with Walter Todd who trained in Shudokan Karate in
Japan
with a Japanese Prince named Kanken Toyama. Upon returning to the
United States
Todd taught Morris Mack from
Yakima
,
WA
who, in turn, trained David Lybbert, sensei at the
Karate
Center
. Sensei Dave has been a student of Shudokan Karate since the 1970’s
and is now a 6th degree black belt and winner of many Grand Champion
trophies from tournaments all over the region.
Competitors
in the tournament will be displaying their knowledge in the Kata, Kumite
(sparring) and the Weapons divisions. Weapons competitors will show their
skill in the bo, the sword (Samurai), the
sais
, the numchucks and other weapons of choice. This year there will also be
a new Entertainment division. Tournament forms may be downloaded above,

a bonus, two seminars will be offered prior to the tournament at The Karate
Center in
Walla Walla
, located at
9 W Birch Street
(click
here for map). On Friday, February 8, 2008 at 6:30pm, Sensei
Frank Arnet will teach a kumite seminar.
Then, Sensei John Franco Jr. will teach the kata
Empi on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 7:45pm, following the kumite
seminar. Sensei John will be performing this kata at
Las Vegas
and we are privileged to get a preview of it at our event. The cost for
one seminar is $35.00, and only $10.00 more to attend the second seminar.
Reservations should be made by calling The Karate Center at (509) 529-8809;
seminars will be limited to around 20 participants.
The
public is encouraged to attend the tournament and enjoy watching the
competitions. Admission is $4.00 at the door of the Dietrich Dome at
Walla Walla
Community College
. Competition begins at 10:00am, with doors opening at 8:00am for
competitors.
